Freddie Gibbs (born Fredrick Jamel Tipton) is an American rapper from Gary, Indiana, widely considered one of the most technically gifted and resilient lyricists in modern hip-hop. Known for his “triple-time” flow and cinematic street storytelling, he has successfully navigated a career that moved from major label “purgatory” to independent dominance and back again.
Growing up in Gary—a city often cited for its high crime rates—deeply influenced his “street poet” persona. His lyrics frequently detail his past as a drug dealer and the systemic issues facing his hometown. Before rapping, Gibbs was a talented football player; he played at Ball State University on a scholarship but was expelled, later serving a brief, unsuccessful stint in the U.S. Army before being discharged.
